It’s Cold and Flu Season!
As if we didn’t have enough to think about this time of the year, it is also cold and flu season. What do you do for your family? I have to admit, I grew up in the era where antibiotics and Robitussin were thrown at most ailments, and we saw herbal remedies reserved for elitist hippies who balked at science. Well, all I can say is you don’t know what you don’t know. What I didn’t know back then, is that nature has provided us with herbs that can help our body in ways that OTC and prescription medications cannot, especially when it comes to colds and flus. Enter elderberry (and some other herbs, too!).
Elderberry is not new, and it is estimated that elderberry has been in cultivation since approximately 2000 B.C.E. Hippocrates reported the medicinal benefits, and an entire book, The Anatomie of the Elder, was written in 1644 by Martin Blockwich reporting its medical uses.

As much as I would love to type it all out here, I have a newborn at home, so I dug into my archives! I went live in my Facebook community group in 2019 all about elderberry and how it may be able to help you and your family navigate this cold and flu season.

The Recipe
AKOS Nutrition Organic Elderberry Syrup
Known as the “medicine chest of herbs” elderberry is great for boosting the immune system, helping to kick your seasonal allergies and shorten the lifespan of cold and flu symptoms. Use these ingredients, or the contents of your DIY kit to create your own 12oz syrup.

Children: ½ – 1 teaspoon per day
Adults: ½ – 1 Tablespoon per day
If sick: Dose with the same amount, every 2-3 hours until your symptoms subside completely.
Ingredients:
3 cups filtered water
1 cup raw, local organic honey (not included with DIY kit)
DIY KIT* (or source your own ingredients!)
3/4 cup dried organic elderberries*
5 whole organic cloves* or 1 tsp ground clove
1 organic ceylon cinnamon stick* or 1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 Tbsp fresh organic ginger (diced) or 1 tsp ground ginger*
Instructions:
- Add water to a medium saucepan and add the dry ingredients.
- Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 45min – 1 hour, or until the liquid has reduced by about ½.
- Remove pan from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
- Strain the mixture into a glass jar or bowl, using the back of a wooden spoon to press the remaining juice out of the berries. If using a fine mesh bag, give the bag a good squeeze before discarding the solids.
- Add 1 cup of raw honey (local is preferred) and stir the mixture well.
- Pour the mixture into a 12oz. mason jar or glass container.
